Bandon Dunes boasts a huge, 4,500 sq-foot clubhouse, featuring a golf shop on the lower level and a superb dining room where guests can enjoy panoramic views of Pacific Dunes, Bandon Dunes, The Punchbowl and all the way out over the Pacific Ocean.

Bandon Dunes

The rugged Pacific coastline of South West Oregon allowed relatively unheralded course architect David MacLay Kidd to wave his magic wand and, clearly inspired by the great links courses of the UK & Ireland, create a stunning collection of courses at Bandon.

Interestingly, Bandon Dunes was in fact Kidd’s first notable design project and the course, one third of which runs right along the Pacific shoreline, has quickly become a big, big hit with golfers paying the resort a visit.

The course is perched on a bluff high above the Pacific Ocean, and combines the charms of links golf with a relaxing resort atmosphere, as well as of course, seemingly infinite spectacular views.

Huge greens and pristine conditioning are the most notable features of the course and with holes routed in all directions, rather than the traditional 9 out and 9 back that we see on so many classic links courses in the UK and Ireland, the wind is a constant factor.

Pacific Dunes

Located a little further north than Bandon Dunes, the Pacific Dunes Course is regarded by many as the resort’s finest course. The views from each hole rival pretty much any other in the world, so even on an off day, golfers can’t help but fall in love with Tom Doak’s layout.

So Pacific Dunes is a links course through and through, and as is the case with many of the classic seaside courses of the UK & Ireland, Doak took full advantage of the stunning natural canvas with which he was presented, making intelligent use of the natural contours and elevation changes. The result is a course that feels like it was discovered rather than manufactured; completely natural and shaped by Mother Nature herself.

Measuring 6,633 yards from the tips, Pacific Dunes isn’t overly long by modern standards, but its clever design will still present even the best golfers with an enthralling challenge, especially when the wind starts to blow.

Bandon Trails

Designed by the formidable duo of Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, the men responsible for the much lauded revamp of the Pinehurst No. 2, Bandon Trails was the third course to open at the resort.

After opening for play in 2005, Bandon Trails quickly garnered a fine reputation, and with a routing that starts in the dunes near the coast before turning inland and through the pine forests, it offers a very different overall experience than the other courses at the resort.

As they say, variety is the spice of life, and with three holes which take their lead from traditional links golf, as well as eight that take the golfer on a journey through picturesque meadowland, not to mention the remaining seven which wind their way through the pines; Bandon Trails offers is in spades.

Old Macdonald

Bandon Dunes was already considered among the best golf resorts in the world by the time the Old Macdonald Course was opened for play, and the new layout, again designed by Tom Doak although this time alongside Jim Urbina, only added to the resort’s allure.

The course was intended to pay homage to Charles Blair Macdonald, who many see as the father of American golf course design, and since it opened for play, Golf Digest have said that it “looks like it was lifted, cleaned and placed from the West of Scotland”, which is testament to the quality of Doak and Urbina’s work.

Starting further inland, Old Macdonald moves towards the shore over the opening holes and from the 4th onwards, the majority of the remaining holes are played with the ocean acting as the perfect backdrop.

Like the classic links courses of the UK & Ireland, Old Macdonald is open and utterly exposed to the elements, and it encourages the golfer to be creative and use the lay of the land to their advantage.
