Royal Dornoch Golf Club is the main course in the Scottish Highlands. In 1981 Tom Watson, after winning the third of 5 Opens, travelled to Royal Dornoch to play 18 holes; he ended up playing 3 rounds and said that it was “the most fun I’ve ever had on a golf course”. He is now an honorary member of the club.
The first three golf links golf courses in Scotland of which there is written record are: 1552, St Andrews; 1593, Leith; 1616, Dornoch. It was in 1877 that the Dornoch Golf Club was founded as the successor of the Sutherland Golfing Society whose members played at Dornoch and Golspie. The superb Carnegie Shield was presented to the club by Mr and Mrs. Andrew Carnegie in 1901 for annual competition, and the link with the United States was forged more closely when they opened a new clubhouse in 1909.
Other Local golf courses include Lossiemouth, Golspie, Brora, Boat of Garten, Tain and Nairn. For quality Scottish golf courses one need look no further than the area surrounding Dornoch which is magical. The drive from Glasgow or Edinburgh is about 4 hours, but one can stop after about 3 hours to play the new Spey Valley golf course, designed by Dave Thomas.
The Royal Dornoch Golf Hotel is located on the first hole of the championship course at Dornoch and has recently been refurbished to offer superior accommodation.
Inverness, being the capital of the Highlands, has become an attractive place to stay in recent years with travelling time to all the courses in the area under an hour.
The completion in 2009 of the glorious championship course at Castle Stuart has transformed the face of golf in the Scottish Highlands; the layout is a true international star, and ranks up there with any links course in Scotland. Book up your itinerary now and experience it for yourself.

Castle Stuart and Dornoch were a real pleasure
We had a really good time and overall the standard of the facilities and organisation were excellent. Castle Stuart and Dornoch were a real pleasure and although we were almost blown off the course at Nairn, some of our party said it was the best challenge they have ever had on a golf course.
